The NNAT stands for Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, and is a tool used to assess the general intellectual ability of children in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. It evaluates a child's ability to reason and problem solve through nonverbal exercises. While the NNAT-2 does not require reading, writing, or speaking to complete, the question types may be very different from any other test or schoolwork your child has experienced. If you want your child to perform at his best, you must expose him to the types of questions he will encounter.
Because the NNAT-2 helps test students for admission into K-12 gifted programs, different levels of the test are offered depending on the student's grade level. Seven different levels are available:
The NNAT-2 can be administered on paper or via computer. It consists of 48 questions, takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, and contains four question types:
The NNAT-2 is scored using the following norms: Normal Curve Equivalents by Age (NCEs); stanines, scaled scores and Naglieri Ability Index (NAI). The raw score is calculated based on the number of questions the child answered correctly. The raw score is converted to a scaled score, which is then converted to a Naglieri Ability Index (NAI) by age in three-month intervals. The NAI scores are set at a mean of 100 based on the child’s age. The lowest NAI score is 50; the highest is 150. Percentile ranks range from 1 to 99 and describe a child’s performance relative to other students in the same age group. For example, a child performing in the 99th percentile scored higher than 99% of the students in the same age group. The average rank falls between the 25th and 75th percentiles.
