IAAT™ stands for Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test™, and it's used to assess a student's knowledge of basic algebraic concepts, as well as other math principles such as geometry and statistics. The purpose of the test is to assess how well a student understands these concepts, which are considered key for moving through grade levels.
The IAAT test is administered in a group setting by school administrators/teachers. It contains 60 questions divided into four parts:
Part 1: Pre-Algebraic Number Skills and Concepts---Measures how well students understand the mathematical skills and concepts necessary for success in an algebra course.
Part 2: Interpreting Mathematical Information---Measures how well students can learn new material presented in graphs or text.
Part 3: Representing Relationships---Measures a student's ability to find formulas for numerical relationships.
Part 4: Using Symbols---Measures how well students understand important symbols of algebra and how they are used.
The IAAT has a fixed time limit of 50 minutes. Students must complete the IAAT within this time frame, or suffer loss of points for unanswered questions. The IAAT is a paper-and-pencil test, not taken on a computer. Administrators have the option of scanning, hand-scoring or sending in test papers for results.
The IAAT is an important test because math skills are among the most commonly found to be less than average in US students. With the current push toward STEM careers and subjects, the IAAT is more important now than ever. Although the IAAT covers math principles taught at school, additional practice and supplemental learning can ensure that your child excel on test day. This is especially true if you know that your child struggles with math.
Preparing for the IAAT is important because it is (usually) a one-shot deal. A poor score could affect your child's later education, particularly if they are considering a STEM career or a magnet or specialized high school.
